Behind The Light
was by far the most enjoyabl album we’ve so far recorded. Even the mixing which is usually a very painful process was rendered painless thanks to the wonders of modern technology,as if one is unhappy with just one tiny thing in the mix one can just change it in 5 minutes rather than having to remix the whole track, which would normally take about 4 or 5 hours. Also Kevin is very easy and quick to work with. Sometimes if an engineer takes ages setting things up or trying to get a particular sound one can just lose that edge and spontaneity and give a less good performance.
Although we did edit a few of the songs down to shorter lengths on Behind The Light all the songs were structured and well rehearsed before we recorded them, unlike Blue Moon . And in fact both Behind The Light and Nobody Knows were in our set when we played Upstairs At The Garage a couple of years ago, though at the time Nobody Knows was really uptempo.
Although we really hate to record using headphones we had to use them on a couple of songs (Stay Beside You and Nobody KNows) as they were built around sampler tunes with very strict timing. Once we’d recorded these and heard how tight everything sounded we decided to use headphones and a click track on the end of Behind The Light and Rising.
We’ve often been compared to Pink Floyd, but I think that Behind The LIght is by far the most Pink Floyd like thing we’ve done so far, especially the ambient beginning which takes up about half the song.
And So The Dream Goes On is very Kraut Rock sounding based on a sampler pattern but using real very regimented sounding drums a bit similar in some ways to the title track of Times And Waving.
Fade is an ambient instrumental a bit like the two instrumentals on our last single.
Rising is the most traditional sounding song in terms of structure and tune, uptempo with strummed bass and pounding drums., while Nobody Knows and After All These Years and Stay Beside You are the melancholy ballads of the album, though Stay Beside You is different to the other two in that it is built around a sample that acts as a drone, onto which everything else is layered to create an almost symphonic effect, whilst Nobody Knows and After All These Years are sparse and melodic with strong vocals more in the vein of Pride or Goodnight.
