Three Times And Waving was again recorded in two separate sessions, the difference here being that our original drummer Tris left after the first session, so we had to start writing the the second part of the album as a three piece while auditioning replacement drummers before finally finding Martyn. The songs we recorded with Tris, Sold Down The River, Into The Fire, Working For Space and Dizzy Life were very much a continuation of the songs on The Glass Bead Game, whereas I think the songs we recorded with Martyn Is It Good News Today?, Three Times And Waving, Say September Sings and Let’s Make A Night Of It were a great leap forward for us at the time, particularly Three Times And Waving which had a weird choppy rhythm we’d never used before, and Let’s Make A Night Of It, a lot of which was written and played on acoustic guitar giving it a completely different texture and I think in general the whole session had a colder, cleaner sound as it was recorded in Blackwing 2, which was a newer larger room recently converted from one of the rehearsal rooms.
