We were surprised at how catchy I Never Know Where You Are ended
up sounding, particularly I guess, the vocals which just blossomed
in the studio, and were really into the idea of recording another
single as soon as possible. Although the sound of the live room
at Alvic was really good, Drostan was pretty keen to work somewhere
else and after our experiences with the air conditioning we werent
exactly putting up a fight, so we went to check out a few studios
and eventually chose The Garden because it had a really nice big
live room. The idea was that the in house engineer would do the
actual recording and Drostan would take on more of a producer type
role and concentrate on the overall sound. But unfortunately for
some reason the engineer was completely opposed to us recording
everything live and the only instrument he would allow in the live
room were the drums, hed worked as a drum technician or something
for Supertramp for a number of years, as he never tired of telling
us and had absolutely no interest in anything other than the drums.
But the bad vibes reached a crescendo when John Perry came down
to mix Flowers Die and casually put his feet up on the mixing desk,
which made Mr Supertramp completely crazy. The whole session was
pretty frustrating. As well as Always and Flowers Die we also recorded
Clearer Than Daylight and another song, and I remember everybody
getting tangled up in 2 inch tape as Drostan just physically cut
about three minutes out of Clearer Than Daylight because we decided
it was too long. The best part of the session I think especially
for Gary was to meet John Perry as we were all big Only Ones fans
and to watch him as he recorded his guitar part along to our backing
track. When we rang him to get permission to cover the song (he
was the most easily contactable as he wrote for International Musician
at the time) we had no idea that he was going to offer to come down
to the session and end up mixing and playing on it.
